Phrasal Verbs and Idioms

Phrasal Verb and Idiom Friday!

Today I wanted to give you some food for thought. When it comes to learning a new language, what’s the most important thing for you to learn? Vocabulary? Grammar? Speaking skills?

Many students have different opinions about this, and often their opinions are formed by the education they received. Often I find students need to brush up on the skills that weren’t highlighted as important when they went to school.

I don’t think it’s necessary to learn grammar rules by heart, but making a personal connection with a grammar concept can help it to stick in your mind.

What study skills do you think have been the most helpful for you while learning English?

  • food for thought: something to think about
  • brush up on: relearn, study for a second (or third or fourth) time
  • learn something by heart: memorize something so it can be recited at a later time
  • to stick in your mind: stay in your mind, stay in your memory
